News from schools and colleges across the county

St Nicholas School sporting success
Charlotte Rampton and Helen Craston, Year 10 pupils from St Nicholas School in Church Crookham, have recently been selected to play hockey for Berkshires U16 and U15 teams, respectively. The girls start training on 11th February and their first fixture is on 11th March. Both girls play for Yateley Hockey Club and have played for the senior squad at St Nicholas School since Year 7, now also helping to coach the younger teams.
Im so happy that I was selected; however, I know that there is still a lot of work to be done, said Helen.
We are delighted at their success which is a result of their hard work and commitment, and that they have been given the opportunity to develop their skills even further, said Mrs Brenda Green, Director of Sport at the school.

Salesian College Biathlon Champions
On Sunday 23 January, three Year 10 boys from Salesian College won the South West, Southern and Welsh Biathlon title at the National Biathlon Semi-Final at the University of Bath. Richard Allen, Owen Wagstaff and Justin Hanson beat the very successful Bristol Grammar School to claim the title. Richard Allen won the individual Silver medal and will now progress along with the Year 10 team to the National Final at Crystal Palace in March.
Mr Patrick Wilson, Headmaster commented Congratulations to the boys on their outstanding performance against many excellent teams from regional schools. We are very proud of the boys and wish them continued success in the National Biathlon Final.

Ditcham Park goes green
A Youth Environment Conference, the first of its kind initiated by pupils at Ditcham Park School near Petersfield, was recently attended by Margaret Paren, Chair of South Downs National Park Authority. Pupils aged 15 to 16 from nine schools across the area attended, with topics on the agenda including ways for youths to get involved in environmental initiatives and sessions of debate with speakers including Damian Hinds, MP for East Hampshire and Professor Hugh Montgomery, who spoke about how important it was for young people to get involved in creating a greener county. Margaret Paren, who launched the Authoritys new online youth poll, now live at www.southdowns.gov.uk said, Im delighted that I was asked to speak at this new conference on the important and topical subject of the environment. The National Park Authority is keen to discover the views of young people and how we can work together to conserve this special area for generations to come.
