From 28 February to 28 March 2014, The Minster Gallery in Winchester will be showing a selection of recent paintings by Roger Dellar.

Born in St Albans, Hertfordshire in 1949, he is a professional artist who specialises in figurative work on a wide range of subjects from music to boats to London scenes.

For this exhibition, we have a selection of paintings representing people attending their daily work: musicians, ballet dancers, chefs and jockeys, jewels of oil paintings observing people in their varied environments and recording them with a particular concentration on the effects of light. They present an intimate and colourful interpretation of life with an individual focus capturing gesture and interaction that sets Roger’s work apart. The situations and characters displayed inspire a voyeuristic feel that is testament to Roger’s ability to paint a moment, even an instant, and successfully relay thought and sense to the viewer.

His interiors and cityscapes have a similar immediacy about them. We recognize the view but are captured by the effervescence of light pouring out, drawing us towards the depicted scene.

Roger Dellar is a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters since 2006, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours since 2001 and was elected to the council of the RI in 2002. In 2003, he was elected a member of the Pastel Society, winning a number of awards there in recent years. Roger is also an active member of the Wapping Group.

Roger has exhibited with several other major societies including the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Society of Portrait Artists and the Royal Academy.
