What is the Miscellany of Le Tour de France?
A celebration of the Greatest Show on Earth!
Created by The Handmade Cyclist, it is a collection of 100 illustrative designs and stories to reveal the hidden world of Le Tour de France spanning 100 years.
Since 1903 Le Tour de France has captured the imagination of the world. A throwback to times past, an anomaly in the world of sport, surely no-one today would conceive a race so long, so tough, so inhumane. For three weeks the coureurs haul their weary bodies around the most beautiful of landscapes - the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Midi, la belle France.
Why did you create the Miscellany?
We wanted to capture the amazing stories behind the scenes and reveal truly hidden tales about the Tour after months and months of research. We chose to create a ‘book cover’ for each year to simply illustrate the tale and then to narrate the story on the reverse. The hardest part was editing it down to our favourite 100, it really was a labour of love.
What is the exhibition?
You can see all 100 posters in one place and underneath each is a story related to that year. We were also invited to be a part of the official Tour de France cultural exhibition and have an exhibition at Barnsley Contemporary Art Gallery.
Who is The Handmade Cyclist?
We are a Winchester based company and have been creating cycling art related designs for the last three years. We sell globally (particularly USA) both online and retail and have been featured in many leading cycling media including Cycling, Pez, The Daily Telegraph, Bicycling, ProCycling, Conquista Magazine as well as leading cycling blogs.
We have recently been commissioned by respected cycling Dutch magazine Soigneur to produce their cover to celebrate Le Tour. The design has been recreated 3.5m large by Look Mum No Hands (bike mecca in London) to hang outside their store for the duration of Le Tour.
At The Handmade Cyclist we love sharing stories. The characters, the rides, the races, the villains, the legends. No other sport has more.
Our inspiration: a deep and lifelong love of the sport. We ride daily. We ride road, CX, MTB. We commute. We want to make designs that share the detail and depth of the rides, races and legends. We hope you enjoy our designs as much as we enjoy creating them.
