‘My house in West Green’

Marylyn Abbott of West Green reveals why she loves her home, her village and most of all, her famous Hampshire garden

In 1993 the ornate village of West Green was disturbed by the arrival of one Marylyn Abbott. Former marketing and tourism manager of the Sydney Opera House, Marylyn succumbed to the lure and made the move across the pond to find the perfect English garden.
Inspired by her mother and grandmother, Marylyns interest in gardening spans from early childhood and her garden in Mittagong, New South Wales, has been the most visited garden in the whole of Australia. Although she claims to have had no expectations when she purchased West Green from the National Trust, her accreditations have been upstanding and she now welcomes visitors from all over
the country.

Restoring a ruin
When I first purchased the house from the National Trust it had been bombed by the IRA and so the place was in ruins, although the house was made liveable I have since spent 16 years restoring the gardens which we open during the summer to showcase my other love of opera. We have the Green Theatre which is all undercover and then we will do suppers in the evening around the lake. Although I grew up with temperatures reaching 40 degrees, many of the plants I grew in Mittagong are similar and if not the same as the ones we grow here. When I first moved to the UK I had no idea where I wanted to live, but as soon as I saw West Green and walked through the village I knew I had made my decision; I was specifically looking for a ruined garden and I thought the house was beautiful and so it catered to all of my needs.
