Hard work, determination and never leaving a stone unturned...

Hard work, determination and never leaving a stone unturned..........

10 years ago when I decided to work overseas, and set up a wealth management company specialising in financial services for expatriates, most people thought I was totally insane.

I am by nature someone that enjoys a challenge... I do not like the word impossible and people telling me it cant be done motivate me more than anything else.

I set-up Finsbury International Ltd and based myself in Azerbaijan. Located at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, there is present a thriving expatriate community attracted to the wealth of oil in the region. After establishing myself there, I was presented with an opportunity to do the same in Singapore. That gave me the chance to expand into another location with an abundance of expatriates. This was harder than establishing in Azerbaijan, I was expecting my first child and once my daughter was born the long periods of time away became less enjoyable and I craved spending time with my new family. In 2007 and with baby number two on the way I decided to move the business closer to home.

Zurich, Switzerland, was and still is my base. Zurich appealed to me; it wasnt the obvious choice, certainly the market for the kind of services I offer wasnt established there, but thats why I liked it. There were at the time, none of the other large brokerages operating there, the fact they hadnt yet set their sights on Zurich was a real positive to me.

Then the financial crisis hit, literally just as Id set up. It was a real struggle to get things going; people were scared and didnt want to make any significant financial changes. In addition the Zurich community is very closely knit, they take their time and watch how new members fair before they would ever dream of having dealings with them. This was a hard time, with daughter number two having now arrived; I was flying back and forth from the UK to Zurich every week spending weeks on my own. I earned very little during the first year, which with a young family, was an uncomfortable place to be. With my wife continuing to support the idea we agreed we needed to weather the storm, and, by sticking to our guns, we did. Finally the tables turned and all the hard work started to come together, prospects became clients, clients grew confident in me, clients in a downturn made money and clients referred friends and colleagues, and Finsbury International Ltd grew from strength to strength.

One of my ongoing struggles has been finding people to join me in expanding the business, people willing to commit to making something happen regardless of the hard work involved. Two years ago I crossed paths with Darren Ward who is a professional footballer, he has that same mentality; we viewed the world around us in the same way, Darren was in the process of establishing a new business that offered various services to his fellow professionals, a big part of which was focusing on their financial situation and we really shared the same view on how that could be done.

Together we decided to bring Finsbury to the UK. Dare I say it, again I was told I wouldnt be able to do it alone, I had rafts of companies who offered to help me by allowing me to become authorised via them, something I would never have been prepared to do. So off I went, Finsbury Financial Ltd (Finsbury) in the UK is now directly authorised by the Financial Services Authority. We have a handpicked board of directors, consultants and business partners that are all on top of their game.

Darren too is no stranger to obstacles, training for the England under 21s world cup in Malaysia he badly broke his leg in two places; he was told this was a serious setback to his career. Originally devastated, he subsequently recovered and went onto play Premiership football and remains in the Championship today playing for Millwall, quite a leap from his prognosis. We jointly own a company called New Incentive FC Ltd which is an Appointed Representative of Finsbury that specialises in financial advice for Sportsmen. With his younger brother Elliott also plays for Premiership side Norwich it's relatively easy for us to get the introductions we required to make it a success.

Recently we were approached by a footballer and his girlfriend, who as a fashion model feels her industry, is in dire need of the same kind of trusted financial advice. In the New Year we hope to establish another division to look after that industry as well as opening another International location in the Middle East.

My message is clear, it's never easy setting up any business but I truly believe that if create opportunity, be positive, embrace the challenges and above all stay focused, then youre on the right track.

Dont tell me it cant be done!
