Get ready for Autumn with Laura Lewis’s guide to the new season’s makeup looks

Skin

Heavy foundations and powders have no place when trying to achieve a fresh look, so look towards BB and CC creams for light coverage, adding only concealer where needed. I love Laura Mercier’s Flawless Fluide as it offers great coverage, but won’t block pores. If you want a longer lasting finish, try adding a primer after your moisturiser – my favourite is Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, which hydrates and provides the perfect base to hold onto foundation for longer. Primers absorb oil, so you’ll get full day wear when you need it most.

Cheeks and Lips

Play down eyes with a sweep of black eyeliner and mascara and then bring out cheekbones and lips in shades close to your natural colour. Clinique’s Cheek Pop Icon in Berry Pop leaves a beautiful finish on cheeks, with no build up or powdery residue. Team with Clinique’s Long Last Lipstick in Soft Matte Magenta for a bold look that anyone can wear. For a glossy look, add Stila’s Lip Glaze in Seashell for an illusion of fuller lips. Olive skin tones, especially those rocking lighter grey to blonde hair shades can opt for a more subtle look by adding Clinique’s Cheek Pop icon in Peach Pop with Bobbi Brown’s Sheer Lip Colour in Sunlit Pink, and if your skin is really pale or pink toned, try Stila’s Convertible Colour in Fuschia across cheeks to add a youthful blush.

Top tip: Full cheeks can get away with colour right on the apples of the cheeks, so smile broadly, and apply on the plumpest part. For a sophisticated look, suck your cheeks in, and apply a sweep of colour a little higher, on the top of the cheekbone, underneath your eye socket.

Eyes

If you want to create an exciting eye look, steer clear of strong colours on cheeks and lips to avoid overdoing it. Sweep a pale cream shade like Smashbox Cream Eye shadow in Riches all over the lid area to begin with. Bobbi Brown’s Surf and Sand palettes provide the perfect shades to experiment with, but for this look we’re using the Surf Eye Palette. Apply a warm shade like Pink Quartz or Bikini Bronze Metallic eye shadow into the brow bone, blending into the inner eye area. Next, pick up some Sea Foam Sparkle on a small, dense eye shadow brush and apply a generous amount to the outer corner of the eye, blending inwards. The aim is to get a pop of colour when you blink. Finish with Smashbox Always Sharp eyeliner in Billionaire, or Bobbi Brown eyeliner in bronze.
