A Taste of the Orient - Chilli Pad at the Jolly Miller in Winchester

Previous owners of the Wykham Arms in Winchester, Katie and Peter Whirledge have now set up shop in the Jolly Miller with their new restaurant Chilli Pad. Editor, Elizabeth Barnett pays a visit to see if this venture will prove to be as successful...

A Thai restaurant! In a pub? Surely not somewhere you would usually associate with good authentic thai food, or so we thought before arriving at Chilli Pad at the Jolly Miller in North Warnborough. There was no seedy entrance to the back room/come dining area that I have had the privilege of passing through in my time, just a warm welcoming atmosphere in what appeared to be a delightfully decorated, good old English pub, with I must say one of the most incredible bars I have ever seen!

The menu was very extensive as you would normally expect in an oriental style restaurant so we opted for the taster menu, which I would thoroughly recommend. The first course of Tod Mun Pla and Satay (thai fish cakes and chicken and beef skewers to you and I) was incredibly good, and the follow up Tom Yum soup was literally like being wrapped in a duvet by your mum when youre not feeling very well.

I could have easily stopped there but then the three main courses came out with jasmine rice to accompany and things started to get competitive between my partner Jon and I, needless to say very little was left after our mammoth banquet and we still managed to squeeze in a sticky toffee pudding which was melt in the mouth yummy. We couldnt stop talking about how fantastic it was on the way home, which is a true sign that this place is seriously good and prices are very reasonable at 16.50 per head for the taster menu.
